Twin Disasters: The Great Chicago Fire and the Peshtigo Fire

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Clarendon Hills Public Library

Event Details

Online Program
It was October 8, 1871. It had been an unusually dry summer, and the fire moved fast. Some survivors said it moved so fast it was "like a tornado." No, we're not talking about the Great Chicago Fire, although it was raging at the very same time. On that same fateful day, the deadliest fire in American history took the lives of more than 500 souls in Northeast Wisconsin, in and around the town of Peshtigo. Join a panel including the Deputy Fire Chief from Western Springs, a historian from the Peshtigo Fire Museum, and a curator from the Chicago History Museum as they discuss these twin disasters--The Great Chicago Fire and the Peshtigo Fire. Please register to receive Zoom link. Many thanks to our friends at Westchester Public Library for organizing this program.
